Towards Quantifying Mesoscale Flows in the Troposphere Using Raman Lidar and Sondes

چکیده
Water vapor plays an important role in the energetics of the boundary layer processes which in turn play a key role in regulating regional and global climate. It plays a primary role in earth’s hydrological cycle, in radiation balance as a direct absorber of infrared radiation, and in atmospheric circulation as a latent heat energy source, as well as in determining cloud development and atmospheric stability. Water vapor concentration, expressed as a mass mixing ratio (g kg), is conserved in all meteorological processes except condensation and evaporation. This property makes it an ideal choice for studying many of the atmosphere’s dynamic features.

Accuracy of Water Vapor Observations from In-situ and Remote Sensing Techniques: First Results from the Demevap 2011 Campaign at Ohp
The accuracy of water vapour observations from four different operational radiosonde types (Vaisala RS92, MODEM M2K2-DC and M10, and Meteolabor SnowWhite) flows simultaneously on the same ballon are intercompared and compared to GPS and Raman lidar measurements during the DEMEVAP 2011 experiment. The RS92 and Snow-White sondes show a slight moist bias at night-time compared to GPS, while the MO...
متن کاملThe Setup and the Performances of L’aquila Raman Lidar and Standard Ptu and Pto3 Balloon Soundings for Envisat Validation
We report the design and the performances of a Raman lidar for monitoring the tropospheric aerosol backscattering and extinction coefficients, water vapor mixing ratio and cloud liquid water. After describing the system components, along with the current limitations and options for improvement, we report examples of observations. The PTU and PTO3 balloon soundings are carried on with standard i...
متن کاملNew examination of the Raman lidar technique for water vapor and aerosols I: evaluating the temperature dependent lidar equations
The intent of this paper and its companion is to compile together the essential information required for the analysis of Raman lidar water vapor and aerosol data acquired using a single laser wavelength. In this first paper several details concerning the evaluation of the lidar equation when measuring Raman scattering are considered. These details include the influence of the temperature depend...
متن کاملObservations of Atmospheric Structure and Dynamics in the Owens Valley of California with a Ground-Based, Eye-Safe, Scanning Aerosol Lidar*
First results are presented from the deployment of the NCAR Raman-Shifted Eye-Safe Aerosol Lidar (REAL) in the Owens Valley of California during the Terrain-Induced Rotor Experiment (T-REX) in March and April 2006. REAL operated in range–height indicator (RHI) and plan position indicator (PPI) scanning modes to observe the vertical and horizontal structures of the aerosol and cloud distribution...
متن کاملPure rotational-Raman channels of the Esrange lidar for temperature and particle extinction measurements in the troposphere and lower stratosphere
The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University operates the Esrange Rayleigh/Raman lidar at Esrange (68 N, 21 E) near the Swedish city of Kiruna. This paper describes the design and first measurements of the new pure rotational-Raman channel of the Esrange lidar. The Esrange lidar uses a pulsed Nd:YAG solid-state laser operating at 532 nm as light source with a repetition rate of 20 Hz a...
